Practice Ground I am extremely pleased with the progress that has been made to the new short game area on the practice ground. Our initial aim was to carry out the work in two phases over a period of 18 months, but due to the good weather and the hard work of the greenstaff all ground works should be completed this winter. Ray Ripsher - Club Captain Captain's Blog star date 1367.8 (19 October 2018) Hello, That's another week gone by and the weather has been tremendous. We are somewhat short on rainfall, as Graham Careford will protest, with some justification and there is a distinct nip in the air, I assume that's still an acceptable comment in 2018, but this has bee...

Course Update

The weather this spring has comprised of extremes; snow in March very wet in April and only recently temperatures reaching 20 degrees. April rainfall reached 101mm compared 31mm in 2017, maintaining the course with this amount of rain has been extremely difficult as it limits machinery usage on the golf course. Charity day, the clubs firs...

Captain's Announcements

Well, we're all ready to go. I'm talking of course about Charity Day on Monday. We now have 25 teams, which I'm really pleased about, the weather looks set fair and we're all going to have a great day whilst raising money for Diabetes UK. Winter Rules Due to the unprecedented amount of rain and cold weather, the County have given dispensation to al...

Course Update

The warm weather last week combined with high moisture levels in the soil created a grass factory of growth that pushed our machinery to the limits. Fairways, approaches and tee were cut three times to keep growth in check, whilst the rough was cut continually throughout the week. All the cutting did create wonderful definition as the course starts...

Ladies' Captain's Announcements

Back to the cold and wet on Wednesday! Some us that weren't so lucky got caught out in the rain and hail. Still it gave those of you that managed to get in early a good laugh at our expense! Unfortunately we came second in our matches last week: Pearson away against Enfield on Thursday lost 5&2 Pearson against away Hendon on Monday lost 6&1...

Captain's Announcements

Hold onto your hats because I have got a lot to get through this week and I need your complete attention. First of all I want to tell you that Sarah and Amy left us this week for pastures new. They were reliable and attentive bar staff and their cheery greetings will be greatly missed. Replacements will be difficult but we will see what we can do. ...

Course Update

Taking advantage of the dry weather this week our priority was to get as much of the golf course cut as possible, after what has been a very wet spring. As predicted the course is very lush and grass growth is vigorous so it is critical that all areas are kept in check to keep the course looking its best. There are still pockets that are still not ...

Ladies' Captain's Announcements

At last the weather has improved and we had over 20 players out on Wednesday. Let's hope this is the start of the summer season! Note all who played will have their scores entered into the Red Cross Eclectic but must see Sue Charles and pay their £5 entry before any more scores can be entered. Congratulations to Sarah Carver on winning the Vet...

Captain's Announcements

What a difference a week makes. I can see that the new irrigation system is going to come into its own sooner than we thought. On Wednesday a deputation of Bush Hill Park warriors went down to Frinton Golf Club, an 1895 course, to do battle with the locals who had thrown down the golfing gauntlet. It is my sad duty now to tell you that it was a rou...

Course Update

Only thirteen days into April and rainfall is already up to 53mm, average rainfall for April is usually 43mm for the entire month. This amount of rain has caused disruption to golf with more course closures on Monday and Tuesday. The forecast for next week is better with temperatures peaking at a barmy 22 degrees, this will help dry the course and ...

Captain's Announcements

I'll just make this one observation – last year at this time we had sun and temperatures in the mid-twenties. This year we had 62 mm of rain in March compared with 18 mm last year. For the mathematically inclined that's over three times as much. Enough said. The Rangers played against Finchley on Monday and I feel someone should review their medica...

Captain's Announcements

A disappointing bank holiday weekend weather-wise, it must be said, though I suppose only having one day of complete disruption should be viewed as a bonus. We did have to cancel the Brasted Trophy on Monday, our first mixed event of the year, but hopefully we will be able to find another day when it can be played. We were, however, able to play ...

Course Update

Over 35mm of rain fell over the Easter bank holiday, leaving the course saturated and leaving surfaces across the whole course flooded. The heavy rain forced us to close on Bank holiday Monday and Tuesday to enable the course to dry out, but it's a slow process. Further light showers on Tuesday night allowed only 10 holes to be open on Wednesday,...

Captain's Announcements - 30/03/18

Captain's Announcements – Week ending 30/03/18 It was nice to get a glimpse of spring at the weekend, even though it was cruelly snatched from us, and the bank holiday weekend looks to be a wash out. Where is global warming when you need it? I start by announcing a fantastic achievement by our own Jenny Benge, who last weekend ran a half marathon...

The greens are slowly getting back to some normality after the intensive aeration and sanding programme of last week. They have been cut by hand this week to give them a light trim and roll. Cutting of the greens will now intensify in cuts per week and height of cut reduced to 4mm as day time temperatures rise. Work has already started ...

Lady Captain's Announcements

Well the weather was much better today, we saw the sun and it was warm! It was surprisingly dry out there considering the amount of snow earlier in the week. However the scores were still not great making it once again a reduction only competition but then some of that could be put down to the course renovations going on and the near beaches that w...

Course Update

The snow at the weekend was not ideal preparation for the up and coming renovation week, and starting work on Monday morning the course still had a thick covering of snow and ice. But we persevered and by the end of the first day the greens had received their first spike using the 19mm tines to a depth of 200mm. Day two saw over 20 tons of sand app...

Annual Dinner 2018

Saturday 17th March was the Club Annual Dinner, an event which has been part of Bush Hill Park tradition for over 100 years. The event was completely sold out and it was great to see so many members dressed to impress and out to enjoy the evening. Speeches were given by Steve Rickwood and Captain David Dickinson, and a four-course dinner was e...

Course Update - 16/03/18

Our main focus this week was the maintenance of bunkers, work consisted of edging to redefine the edges and the movement of sand to ensure the bases are more consistent. We did experience a large build-up of sand to the backs of many bunkers we worked on, this is due to incorrect raking. I do encourage every golfer when raking their footmarks to ra...

The golf course recovered very well after the arctic weather and snow of last week. Conditions were so good we managed to cut fairways, tees and approaches improving the definition that can be missing at this time of year. We have erected a small wooden fence on the 7 th path to encourage golfers to use the path and to avoid grassed areas beco...

A very cold and snowy week on the course, but the arctic weather did not hamper progress and completion of the 7th path extension.  This week we finished the bottom section of the path which connects to the men's tees, this now enables players to enter and exit the teeing ground without walking through the muddy area that exists in the winter....
