BUSH HILL GROUSE

Format: Texas Scramble. Medal format. Shots are taken according to the men’s index. To be conducted as a free draw for partners by the mixed competition committee, groupings may be any combination of all men mixed or all ladies however the draw decides.
Number of holes: 18
Tees: Gentlemen play from the white tees and ladies from the red tees.
Eligibility: 5,6 & 7-day adult members. Lifestyle members may play on payment of the appropriate credits. Juniors (boys and girls) may play but no junior pairs are allowed.
Ties: As usual
Additional comments: Usually played on the May Bank Holiday. Two levelling shots will be added to the ladies’ handicap to equalise the difference in standard scratch scores, this is to be added before calculation of shots for the team. Shots are determined by calculating 10% of the combined four handicaps. The figure arrived at is NOT rounded and is the playing handicap to be taken off the gross score. All four players drive at each hole and the best drive is decided. The other three players all hit a shot from this point. The best of these shots is decided and the other three play from this spot, and so on. The same format continues on the green. Decide which player’s ball is to be taken and the other three play from that spot on the green. Continue until a ball is holed out.
History: Inaugurated by Martin Dench during his captaincy in 2004.

CAPTAIN’S DRIVE IN BOGEY

Format: Fourball betterball stableford played off 90% handicap after any levelling shots are added for the ladies. Pairs may consist of any combination, all male, all female, or mixed.
Number of holes: 18
Tees: White for men, red for ladies.
Eligibility: 7 and 6-day adult members. Lifestyle members may play on payment of the appropriate credits. Juniors (boys and girls) may play but no junior pairs are allowed.
Ties: As usual.
Additional comments: Played on the first Sunday morning of the Captain’s year prior to their driving into office.
History: In 1986, on his first Sunday in office as captain, Mr A. Johnston Brown presented to the club a historic number one wood. The club was his father’s in the 1920’s and was Johnston’s first full sized driver. The club professional, George Low, reduced the shaft to fit on to a mahogany board, which itself was a gift from ‘Bill’ W.S.Parker. The driver is permanently placed on a wall in the club and the names of the winners are recorded on a plaque.
