Captain's Announcement's 28th September 2021

Welcome to the first Blog of my captaincy! Having survived the stress of actually hitting the ball off the tee on Sunday, I can now get on with business of being captain.

It was great to see so many people on Sunday morning enter the Captain’s driver competition. There were some great scores and a couple of points separated a lot of potential winners.

The winners this year with an excellent 44 points was the dream team of Mark Bracey and Mark Hubbard- Well done! The teams on 43 points can surely remember the vital missed putts (as I always can…). Well done also to Sean Daniels who secured the nearest the pin on 7 with what I can only assume was a beautifully struck short iron….

Results

1st Mark Bracey & Mark Hubbard - 44 points

2nd Richard Empson & Graham Evans - 43 points (countback)

3rd Alan Brown & Barry Clarke – 43 points (countback)

Next was the scary business of the captains drive in. I had already packed my golf bag in the car when I remembered there was one more thing to do…

Not only did I need to avoid Robbie Martin’s bet of 2 consecutive air shots in front of family, friends and willing hecklers, I also had the challenge of hitting the ball within 50 yards of our newly appointed junior Captain, Jack Bidmead. Happily, my ball launched successfully into a gusting headwind, leaving Jack’s excellent high draw drive to pass my effort by a mere 40 yards….

I pleased to say that the winner of the sweep was Danny Hill who had enough confidence to back me for the distance of 225 right. Danny also showed true dedication by having to stay the previous night as he didn’t have enough fuel to get home and back for the comp. Thanks Danny! I hope the floor was not too uncomfortable!

Also, thanks to Mark for collecting the donations and guesses. If any of you missed the chance or still owe him this is the just giving link. It really is a worthy cause which affects plenty of people we know

Saturday saw the Final Stableford, which is the competition reserved for the elite stableford winners over the past summer season. Congratulations to John Stolliday, who secured the prestigious glass whisky tumbler with a solid 38 points.

In the Extra Stableford Stephen Preston added another Victory to his earlier 36 hole Coronation cup win with 41 points. Division two was won by Kieron O’Shea on countback from Stephen Ames and Jonathan Hurndall. Well done to all!

And further congratulations to Neil Hurst for securing the first Eagle of my captaincy on the 12th hole early on Saturday morning. The sign of some great golf to come this year!

Forthcoming Events & Competitions

This week we have the Autumn Kruger Sovereign on Thursday (played off the yellow tees). Saturday is the final medal (for all medal winners) and Extra medal.

Don’t forget this Sunday is my first men’s four ball draw & sweep. This is a hotly contested and fun event and is a great way for new members to get involved and be entertained by all the Clubs finest characters. I’m hoping we can do the draw on the morning so remember not only to enter via IG but also to turn up promptly for coffee at 8 for the drama of the actual draw.

Danny and I will be challenging any takers to the Captain & Pro challenge. Danny and I will work out the best slots so contact Danny to book your slot for the year ahead.

John Shaw Trophy

It is with a heavy heart that I have to report the winner of the John Shaw trophy as…..

… Michael Stainton. By beating Richard Paterson in the final of the Rafferty he has pipped me at the post! Well done for the most consistently good golf!

I’m really hoping we can avoid the problems we have had in the past 18 months and have a fun, enjoyable and successful golfing year at the Club. I look forward to your participation and support.

All the best

Ted
