Captain's Announcement's 21st July 2021

This past Saturday was the 1st round of the Men’s Handicap Club Championship.

The course was in immaculate condition, with the “Turfing Iron” (correct name for the machine that gets the greens smoother, flatter & somewhat quicker) being used to get the already quick greens, up to Championship pace. And those quick greens certainly made a difference to the scoring.

Of the 89 competitors entered into the competition, only 7 equalled or bettered their handicap.

Kieran Costello had the lowest net score of the day with a net score of 67, which included a 9 on the 14th & puts him in pole position for Round 2 this coming Saturday. (No pressure there then !) 1st Round Results:

1st Place Kieran Costello net 67.

2nd Place Ricky Townsend net 68.

3rd Place Matthew Bowen net 68.

4th Place Nigel Bidmead net 69.

5th Place Edward Rees net 70.

6th Place Graeme Allen net 70.

7th Place James Craggs net 70.

Very well played Gents !

It’s all very tight at the top, with many more poised to overtake the leaders, should they falter. Will 1 of the aforementioned 7 take the title or will a new name emerge from the pack ?

This Saturday promises to be an interesting encounter, so keep an eye on the leader board.

Also this coming Saturday is the Men’s Club Championship which is being played over 36 holes.

As this is our most prestigious competition of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to remind all members playing, about SLOW PLAY !!

This Saturday the course is going to be extremely busy & due to the nature of the Competition’s the field can become quite slow. Please make sure that you keep up with the group in front. Letting groups play through is good etiquette but with a full course, this will create even more congestion. If a group is losing ground on the group in front and do not seem to be trying to close the gap, contact the Pro Shop. Should it be required, a Marshall will come out to speak to those playing slowly. If a group cannot keep up with the pace of play after being warned, they will be asked to leave the course.

Hopefully, an unnecessary measure.

Let’s all do our bit to keep the pace of play flowing.

On Sunday 18th July it was the Men’s invite to Women mixed pairs Greensomes competition.

In what can only be described as blistering heat, 31*C in the shade. 19 mixed pairs took to the course. I’m going to add to that infamous saying, “Only mad dogs & Englishmen & Golfers go out in the Midday sun.”

Our host, Vice Captain Edward “Ted” Rees did an amazing job of organising the event with welcome refreshments and snacks at the Oasis hut on the 13th tee. The ice cold Pimms giving a touch of class to the proceedings followed by a delicious meal in the restaurant.

Sadly due to the restrictions still in place, we were unable to have a prize presentation but the Winners with a fantastic score of 41 points were Lucy Bidmead & Guy Saunders.

Results:

1st Place Lucy Bidmead & Guy Saunders 41 points.

2nd Place Rajendram John Annaradnam & Sharon Saunders 40 points.

3rd Place Edwina Hicks & Steven Hicks 38 points.

Very well played to all & a massive thank you to Ted for all his efforts in making the event such a success.

This coming Saturday, the big one, The Men’s Club Championship.

Play well !

Iain
