Waking to the sound of rain on Wednesday morning was disappointing, as was the news of the course being closed, so out with a whimper, with no golf balls struck, went our End of Season Alliance. We are, however, fortunate to have got this far into November without having to cancel anything. After a morning of bridge for twelve of us, we went ahead with the lunch, with thirty-five attending, and presented a few prizes for the competitions held in October and November. The Shepherd’s pie and fish pie were very tasty and worth waiting for. Thank you all for turning up and supporting the event in spite of the fact that there was no golf played.

Congratulations again to all winners!

It was lovely to have all the Christmas decorations up and, as usual, the Christmas tree in the entrance hall looks magnificent. (Not too sure about the big red bow though….)

Last week, the Club held its annual Beaujolais competition. The winning team of Tracey Ripsher, Martin Dunnett, Gaye Illsley, and Don O’Shea were very warmly congratulated!

Next week on Wednesday, December 5th, we have a Greensomes competition, played in pairs. You can sign up in two’s on IG.

The following week, December 11th, is a Christmas Waltz. Please sign up on IG and there will be a draw on the Monday before in teams of three.

Our last competition before Christmas is on December 18th – a 13-hole Texas Scramble. Again, this will be a draw but for teams of four. Sarah C will be offering us mulled wine at the hut and there will be mince pies. Feel free to keep playing after the 13th if you wish but the score counting for the competition is the first 13 holes. This will be a good opportunity to wear your Christmas jumper or festive outfit.

Several of our Club management team have gone to Leicester this evening for the Club Awards run by the Club Mirror magazine. We have been successful in the past so I will report next week on any awards the Club receives.

Tomorrow is our Christmas Fayre and we are hoping for a good attendance from golfers, friends, and family. Lucy has again arranged this brilliantly and we had a little team working on furniture removals on Wednesday afternoon. Nikki has been doing a fantastic job of selling raffle tickets for the wonderful selection of raffle prizes. Ruth and Umar will be selling on the day and Mandy will be taking in the entry fee - only £1. I will report on how the Fayre went in my next blog.

Our Women’s Christmas meal is next Thursday evening, December 5th. We will sit down at 7:30pm but please come for a glass of Prosecco beforehand from 7pm. The meal menu has been on the noticeboard in the locker room for you to sign up and tick your main course preference. I am giving the numbers to Roy this Friday so if you have forgotten to sign up, please contact me directly. Thank you.

Wine on the tables (two bottles) will be provided by the Women’s Section and there will be table quizzes to amuse you. This is always a relaxed and fun social evening so do come and get to know your fellow golfers better. Dress is smart casual – no muddy boots or mud-spattered trousers in sight!

Reminder – please complete your Catering and Bar Survey if you have not already done so. It's important to express your opinions and comment about what the Club does in relation to the food and drink available and where it is served. Your views will influence what the Club offers in the future.

In looking for a thought of the week to do with rain and golf, I came across this: ‘Golfing in the rain is good for your health. It’s been called a paradox of nature that you can improve your golf swing by swinging while blinded by the rain, but it makes sense’. (Anon)

So next time you are playing in the rain, remember it’s good for your health (?!) and see it as an opportunity to improve your swing!! Ever the optimist!

Happy golfing when the course is dryer….
