Not many leaves on the trees now. The winds and rains of the last few days have hastened their fall. But they have been superbly cleared from most places by our wonderful Groundstaff and we just had to contend with a few muddy places in our Wednesday competition, the Winter Greensomes. (And we were fortunate as after the Wednesday night rains, as well as no buggies, there were no trolleys without medical dispensation on the Thursday.)

Eighteen pairs took part. A great entry for this time of year. And some great results!

1st:  Louise Fickling and Ozlem Orgen with 37 points

2nd: Michelle Grammar and Liz Tolton with 36 points

3rd:  Lisa Martin and Sue Nugent with 35 points

Well done to our top pairs! Really good results in those winter conditions!

Last week was a very busy week for the Club. Guy, in his blog, has mentioned about the Club’s success in Leicester at the annual Club Mirror awards. Well done BHPGC, Debbie and Sonia!

And I can confirm that our raffle at the Christmas Fayre made just over £2,000, which will go to Nightingale Cancer Support Centre, our Captains’ Charity this year! From the stall holders’ fees, entry, coffee/tea, home produce stall, bottle tombola, and knitted items, we raised a further £1,000+, which will go to support the expenses of the Women’s Section.

If you weren’t able to go, you missed a treat! The Clubhouse was abuzz with people buying from the stallholders, eating and drinking, and enjoying the festive atmosphere.  We had even more attend than last year.

I will say again that we could not do this without your support. Thank you all! Huge thanks to Lucy who is the driving force behind the Fayre, to Chris and Una who ran the bottle tombola, to Lisa who had made such lovely knitted items, to the coffee and tea makers, and to the Committee who all worked like Trojans on the day and made the Fayre the great success it was.

The day after the Fayre on the Friday was also busy with a successful session of Duplicate Bridge, a mixed Social Golf session, and sadly, the wake of one of our previous Women’s Captains, Pat Briggs.

Our thoughts are with Davina Farmer whose husband Frank, a long-standing member, died at the weekend. Details of the funeral will follow but it’s likely to be in January.

We have two more Wednesday fun competitions before Christmas.

Wednesday, December 11th is the Christmas Waltz played in teams of three and

Wednesday, December 18th is a Texas Scramble for 13 holes, played in fours.

Both are draws so please sign up on IG and the teams will be drawn on the Monday before the competition.

For the Texas Scramble on the 18th, you can look forward to mulled wine, organised by Sarah Carver, and mince pies served at the hut. Please feel free to wear your Christmas jumper, outfit and/or hat.

Please note that Danny and Nicola are running one more lesson (for handicappers over 42) before Christmas on December 17th at 1pm. There are still places for that lesson.  This is a great opportunity to learn more and improve your golf. Please sign up.

You may also be interested in the Women’s Christmas Event being organised by Nicola earlier that day from 9am to 11:30 – a six-hole, Christmas-themed Texas scramble with prizes (£20 entry).

Nicola is regularly running group lessons on a Tuesday morning and a Saturday afternoon. These build on everything you learned while on the Academy programme and give new, fun insights into golfing techniques for the more experienced women players.  Please let Nicola know when you want to join her for a session.

It’s the Women’s Christmas Meal on Thursday, December 5th with a Prosecco reception, 3-course meal and quizzes. More on this next week.

A friend, knowing my passion for golf, recently gave me a book of quotations about the sport so I am not going to be short of thoughts or quotes for the next few weeks. This one made me laugh out loud. Hope it appeals to you. It was said by Herbert V Prochnow, a US banking executive, toastmaster and writer in the 20th Century:

‘A teacher was taking her first golf lesson. “Is the word spelled ‘put’ or ‘putt’?” she asked the instructor.

“’Putt’ is correct”, he replied. ‘Put’ means to place a thing where you want it. ‘Putt’ means a vain attempt to do the same thing.”

Enjoy trying to put your putt where you want it this week!
