On Wednesday morning, the mist hung low over frosty greens until the sunshine came out to burn it away, leaving sparkling dew drops of water everywhere. The Egyptian geese were promenading round the lake and flashes of green parakeet could be seen in the bare trees, heralded by their distinctive squawks. There were two foxes out wandering near the 14th and 18th fairways, and when they saw there was no food in sight, reclined casually on the leaves in the sunshine, completely blending in with their surroundings. This wonderful nature reserve is also our golf course! And a lovely morning’s golf was enjoyed by twenty women. We played the fun format of six holes of Greensomes, six holes of Foursomes and six holes of 4BBB.

The winners were Lucy Bidmead and Liz Tolton with an excellent score of 40 points!  Lucy was playing brilliantly and did not seem at all phased by the mud, which scuppered many a shot for others.

The runners-up with 36 points were Lisa Martin and Christina Mann.

Well played you worthy winners!

Next Wednesday, there is a Stableford. Then on 19 February, we are having another fun competition – the 5-club challenge when you can take only five clubs onto the course, one of which has to be the putter. The week after on February 26th, there is a Medal competition. And, whoosh - that’s February gone!

The revised Handicap Divisions and Limits document will be coming out shortly. The Committee has reviewed the comments sent in and made some adjustments. Personal responses will be sent to those who wrote in.

Just a few golfing reminders:

  • Please repair your pitch marks. Some of the greens were looking a bit pock marked.
  • If you need to pull out of a playing competition, please remember to tell your partner (s) (as well as Helen Savage if you can’t withdraw on IG). A text or WhatsApp is fine.
  • When asked to do a general play card, remember to check the category of membership. e.g. a 5 Day member can neither mark a card nor do a card on a Saturday or Sunday without incurring a green fee.

As I’ve just written my article for the Bush Telegraph, which took some time, this blog is short for me! But I can’t resist leaving you with a quote as usual, another from Herbert Prochnow, an American banker, toastmaster and writer: ‘Golf for most of us is just another method of beating around the bush!’

So good luck with getting to the heart of your golf this season!
