Join us for an unforgettable talk with Vanessa O’Brien - one of the greatest living explorers of our time. As the first woman to reach the most extreme points on land, sea, and air, she has earned six Guinness World Records, and has redefined the limits of human exploration.
Having trekked to Mount Everest base camp and reached the summits of a number of notable mountains, including five of the world's fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, Vanessa decided to build on her passion for mountaineering and set herself the challenge of achieving the Explorers Grand Slam by summiting the Seven Summits in 295 days- the fastest time by a woman, and skiing to both poles in just 11 months.
Vanessa participated in Blue Origin’s NS-22 mission, the first with two women, using wireless MRI technology to study the overview effect on the human brain and carrying the UN Women’s flag to symbolise limitless potential for women. As the first woman to achieve the Explorers’ Extreme Trifecta, she also joined the fourth manned dive to the Mariana Trench at 10,925m in 2020, spending three hours at 9,500m and collecting water samples to study ocean acidification. On land, she became the first British or American woman to summit K2 in 2017, collected radiogenic isotope samples from the Godwin Austen glacier.
As an advocate for women, a champion for the environment, and an inspiration to those daring to step beyond their comfort zones, Vanessa’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary.
With heart and humour, she shares her incredible story as told in her memoir, To The Greatest Heights - and as part of this event, a limited number of signed copies of Vanessa's book will be available to purchase.
