This Wednesday dawned bright blue with clear skies, in considerable contrast to last week’s skies full of cloud and rain. The sun shone and the temperature rose, as did many of the scores for the day. We had a packed field of 43 for the three competitions all being played on one day: The Bushguarders Cup, the May Stableford and the Golf Foundation’s Unleash Your Drive. Almost half managed to score 30 plus.

The winner of The Bushguarders Trophy was Sharon Saunders with 39 points; and the runner up was Ruth Goulding with 38 points

The May Stableford winners were:

Division 1 – Sharon and Ruth

Division 2 – Mandy Lawson with 38 points, and runner -up with 38 points, Michelle Grammer

Division 3 – Clare Laycock with an amazing 45 points! And runner-up, Emma Supple with 37 points

The Unleash Your Drive winners were:

Category 1- No-one qualified

Category 2 – Sharon Saunders

Category 3 – Clare Laycock

Congratulations to you all on your great scores today.

Only one person with a two today though: Ros Margey. Well done, Ros!

There were 5 in the 9-hole competition and Carole Wallis came first with 22 points.

Congratulations, Carole!

I expect to see some handicaps coming down after today!

A few mini nags having seen today’s cards: some are still forgetting to put their cards in the box in the locker room immediately after entering the scores on IG; some cards are still not being filled in correctly with information missed off; and I know it’s not essential but when filling in Stableford cards, it is helpful to see the Stableford points. Thank you.

If you are feeling guilty, you can always atone by coming to the divot repairing session on Monday, 19 May at 5pm (as per the email of 29 April). Free food after!

Next week is our Spring meeting on Wednesday, 7 May. The morning is a Medal, and the afternoon is a team competition over 9 holes. The afternoon is open to Divisions 1 to 3 so it would be good to see some more Division 3 women playing and joining us for the meal after when we will also do some prize giving.

The following week on Wednesday, May 14th is the Ping 4BBB when you need to sign up with a partner and play in teams of four.

I’ve spotted a date some of you may want to put into your diaries. Dig out those cowboy boots and come Line Dancing with Saddle Bags on Saturday, June 7th at 8pm!  Not to be missed if you enjoy a laugh and a dance!

Good luck to all the women supporting the Captain’s Charity Day for The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre on Monday, May 5th, which now has a huge entry, including Spurs players. The raffle and auction should be fun. Enjoy the day!

Our Kings Cross Walk with Polly Schlesinger from the C20 Society on Monday, which raised funds for the Captain’s Charity, was a great success. We were taken down some unusual roads including the little gem of Keystone Crescent, the smallest crescent in Europe, with its 24 houses in various states of repair. We saw some varied 20th century buildings including the post war flat developments designed by Berthold Lubetkin; and sat briefly in the perfect circle of the Victorian, Percy Circus garden where we enjoyed some welcome shade.

We needed the shade from some of our lovely trees today. Not long ago, I included the photo of one of our beautiful cherry blossom trees. Here’s a magnificent, blossoming horse chestnut, and a (struggling but atmospheric!) oak, both of which are near the 5th green. And while on nature notes, I must mention the two buzzards seen soaring on the thermals above the trees to the left of the 18th fairway. Wonderful!

Our course trees are many and varied and although at times we curse them for getting in the way of our shots, we wouldn’t want any of them to go for as well as enhancing the beauty of the course, they provide homes for so many creatures. The destruction of the tree at Sycamore Gap next to Hadrian’s Wall and the ancient oak in Whitewebbs should never have happened. We can be confident that Leigh, our Course Manager, cares for and about our trees and will ensure that they continue to flourish. I’ll leave you with these words from Tasreem Haneed, a writer and consultant from Pakistan: ‘Learn character from trees, values from roots, and change from leaves’.

Enjoy the sunny golfing while it lasts.
