Thanks to all of you, Wednesday, 23 July has been a truly memorable Women’s Captain’s Day for me! I had decided to have a fun competition to include as many as possible, playing the format of a Stableford, with one score counting on par 5’s, two scores on par 4’s, and 3 scores on par 3’s.

Here are some of the things that made my day:

My Captain’s flowers, chosen and prepared by Sharon and Davina, looked wonderful. Helen Savage had prepared the cards with the 85% handicaps so there were no last-minute calculations needed. The sun decided to shine after only a hint of a shower, and the morning remained comfortably balmy. It was good to see 47 playing. Sean and Guy did a great job at the hut with serving refreshments. I was pleased to have an outdoor photo opportunity on the steps and to see such happy faces. I was moved and flattered to be announced and escorted into the restaurant by our Club Captain, Guy. Roy had provided a splendid buffet lunch. Our bridge ladies, including some past Captains, joined us for the lunch, and it was lovely as ever to have them participate. I was delighted that Danny, who has been so supportive, was able to come and present his generous Pro’s Day prizes. And it was great to see Stewart, Debbie, Michelle, and later Sonia, relax and join us for the lunch. To cap it all we had some worthy winners! What more could I ask?! So, a heartfelt thank you to all those involved. It was such an enjoyable day for me!

Our winners were:

1st Lucy Bidmead, Carol Dodd, Mary Kemal and Debbie Toni 94 points

2nd Nikki Chodurek, Wendy Goodman, Christina Mann and Liz Tolton 85 points

3rd Alex Towndrow, Ozlem Orgen, Jane Majer and Georgie Russell 84 points

NTP for Div 1 on the 16th Lisa Martin

NTP for Div 2 on the 5th Justine MacLeod

And Lucy had 3 x 2’s!

Congratulations to all our winners!

Following on from last week’s Women’s Captain’s Charity Day, I am pleased to say that we have received several more donations, and thanks to your generosity, have now raised a further £200 making £1,450 for The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre.

Between the Wednesday of the Women’s Captain’s Charity Day and the Wednesday of the Women’s Captain’s Day, there has again been an eventful golfing week.

On the Friday, we had the Past and Present Women’s Captain’s Trophy followed by a lunch.  This was won by Lucy Bidmead. And Tracey scored a hole in one on the first. Fantastic, Tracey!

In the evening, Nicola ran an interesting golf seminar covering the properties of the range of clubs and what to take into consideration when using them. It certainly challenged me to think how I use my clubs and for what. Don’t miss the next one - to be arranged.

On Sunday, July 20th, we had the Gent’s Invitation to Women, followed by an indoor barbecue style meal as it had turned too chilly to sit out. The competition was won by Dave Griffiths and Philippa Hawken with 41 points, just beating Andy Dodd and Anneka Vestey on countback. It was a good day for Andy as he had a hole in 1 on the first!

Tracey Ripsher and Lisa Martin played their regional Australian Spoons final on Tuesday, 22 July. They did well coming 16th out of 48 but they were disappointed in the venue for the event and the quality of the course - and a drenching downpour didn’t help!

Next week, on Wednesday, 30 July, it’s the Wright (Division 1), Angora (Division 2) and Cashmere (Division 3) Cups with a medal format; and there is a 9-hole Stableford. If you are not able to play in the Cup comps on the 30 July then there is an alternate on Sunday, 27 July.

The following week on Wednesday, 6 August, it’s our Women’s Invitation to Women from other Clubs. You have recently received an email with more details about this. Please share these with your guests. Although entry is closed, if you have found a team of 4 including two guests, please let Helen Savage know, as she will enter you.

Then on Monday, 11 August, it is the first round of the Rafferty Cup, played in 2’s, the second round being on Wednesday, 13 August when there is also an alternate medal; plus a 9-hole Stableford.

It will be the 36-hole Club Championship on Wednesday, 20 August with an alternate 18-hole medal. The 18-hole medal can also be played on Sunday, 17 August.

We have two mixed competitions coming up: the Women’s Invitation to Men on August 10th, for which the sign-up is open; and the Lambert Trophy on August 17th.

While we were battling out our Men’s Invitation to Women, Scottie Scheffler was playing his final round to win the Open at Royal Portrush. After his win he said: ‘Every day is a battle, playing this game is a battle with yourself to get the best out of your game and yourself, and this week I did a really good job of hanging in there mentally and playing some really good golf.’

Keep battling, golfers, there’s a game to be won!
