Let’s start this week’s blog with news of a wonderful result for our final 5-a-side match played on Sunday, 27 July, at home to Northwood! With Lucy captaining her team of Lesley Avent, Tracey Ripsher, Sharon Saunders, and Lisa Martin plus herself, they secured a convincing 4-1 win. We now wait for the final matches to be played by other Clubs before we know where this leaves our team in the final running.
Yet more wonderful results in our medal competitions played today (and on Sunday). We had 19 competing in the Wright Cup for Division 1; 17 players in the Angora Cup for Division 2; and 2 in the Cashmere Cup for Division 3. There were some amazing net scores:
Wright Cup for Div 1:
1st Ruth Goulding (24) 61
2nd Lucy Bidmead (14) 66
3rd Alison Towndrow (29) 69
Angora Cup for Div 2:
1st Mandy Lawson (33) 59
2nd Kate Malleson (42) 68
3rd Sue Evans (36) 68
The Cashmere Cup cannot be awarded this year as there were only two players but well done to Sue Palmer (46) for her good net score of 68.
There were seven players scoring two’s today: Lucy and Angela G on the 16th; Louise, Helen G, Ruth and Val on the 13th, and Alison on the 7th.
Eight played in the 9-hole Stableford, which Janet Leach won with 21 points.
Many congratulations to all the winners, particularly Ruth and Mandy for their outstanding net scores, plus a special mention for Lucy scoring net 66 off a handicap of only 14! You were superstars today!
Next week on Wednesday, 6 August, it’s our Women’s Invitation to Women from other Clubs. We now have 56 entries including guests playing from 17 other different Clubs. Registration commences from 7:45am when team cards will be available. (Just a reminder that handicaps will be capped at 45.) There is a shotgun start from 9am with tea, coffee and pastries available from 8am. Please bring cash for the raffle, which is for our charity The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre. Delicious cakes will be available in the hut; and we will have a buffet lunch and prize giving after. On Monday, you will receive an email with the final details and the timesheet with your tees will be available. The cost is £50 per pair.
Then on Monday, 11 August, it is the first round of the Rafferty Cup, played in two’s; the second round being on Wednesday, 13 August when there is also an alternate medal; plus a 9-hole Stableford. Those playing in the Rafferty will play in the same order on both days.
It will be the 36-hole Club Championship, Scratch and Handicap, on Wednesday, 20 August with an alternate 18-hole medal. The 18-hole medal can also be played on Sunday, 17 August.
On Wednesday, 27 August, we have the August Stableford, a relief for some after all the medal competitions! The alternate for this is on Sunday, 24 August; and there will be a 9-hole Stableford after the Wednesday, 18-hole competition.
We have three mixed competitions coming up: the Women’s Invitation to Men on August 10th, a Greensomes for which the sign-up is open; the Lambert Trophy Foursomes on August 17th; and the Martin Dench Texas Scramble for any team combination of four players on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August, plus the Wilson Putting Vase comp.
There we go – quite a gallop through August before July has even ended!
Other dates to note include:
Thursday, 31 July am: The last Triangular match, now just a friendly with Enfield.
Thursday, 31 July at 7pm: New Members’ Evening with drinks and nibbles. The Captains and Committees would like to meet and greet all our new members. I look forward to meeting some of you then.
Thursday, 14 August at 1:15pm: The Women’s Captain’s Charity Bridge Drive (now full!), organised by Chris Robertson to raise funds for The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre. Chris still needs raffle prizes. Please leave them in the women’s locker room. Thank you.
I haven’t regaled you with a nature note this week yet but I want to mention that the number of butterflies has thankfully increased, and you can see these Gatekeeper butterflies on our course, but this photograph was actually taken on my recent Dunwich Heath walk!

As July comes to a close, if we could guarantee the weather we have had this July, we would agree with Roald Dahl when he said: “If I had my way, I’d remove January from the calendar altogether and have an extra July instead.”
Happy July into August golfing!
