Welcome to my first weekly blog. The first day of my Captaincy saw an amazing finish and result as our Foxes team defeated Enfield GC (5-4) to win the Abrey knockout cup for the first time. This is Middlesex 9-a-side singles matchplay competition (Ryder Cup type pressure), and a great achievement for the club. Congratulations to all those who played over five knockout rounds and a great way to start my captaincy year although Guy has claimed it’s a great way to end his year!!

Also, thanks to Jon Copley for organising matches and players. My Captain’s Drive In on Sunday morning was fantastically supported with around 80 players in a shotgun start and the same number taking lunch in the Ridings restaurant afterwards. The competition was won by Kilian Stenning and Jack Townsend winning on countback from Peter Wafford and Dilip Kapur followed by Helen Roberts and Neil Johnson all with 46 points. Congratulations and well played to all, and a massive thank you to all participants and for supporting the event.

The morning round was followed by my drive in down the 18th fairway. I won’t say the distance, but it was down the middle. The sweep was won by Andrew Harrington. Again, a huge thank you to everyone and especially to my vice captain Ian McNally in raising £1,165 for this year’ Captain’s Charity the Noah's Ark Children's Hospice in Barnet. A fantastic start. As mentioned, this year’s charity is Noah’s Ark. There will be leaflets around the clubhouse as well as collection buckets. It’s a really worthy cause and both Umar and I aim to do our best to make it another successful year of fundraising.

The water hazard on the 13th hole is the Captain’s charity donation lake but there’s also the opportunity to buy season ticket insurance for £20 to cover almost weekly donations as in my case! Just find a bucket in the bar and donate for the penalty shot.

Moving onto last Saturday’s golf we had the scratch, extra and final medal competitions on Saturday. This week’s winners were: Scratch medal - Dave Boss 74. Extra medal - Simon Baker 66 (nett). Final medal - me 66 (nett).

This weekend we start the winter league competition on Saturday and Sunday, so get cards in early while conditions are favourable. Finally, Sunday 5th will be my first Captain’s four-ball draw. It would be great to see as many participants as possible. It’s a random draw for partners and there is a chance to win a four-ball voucher for the winners so please try to make it if you have the opportunity. It’s an 8am meet for coffee and pairings draw with an 8:30am shotgun start.

Thanks once again for your support and happy golfing till next week.
