On Friday, the Bush Babies held their Captain’s Day, with over fifty participants playing and dining, with a special award this year of the Allan Ellwood Memorial Trophy, donated by Allan’s family. Allan was a well known member of the club, representing various teams and a long-standing member of the society, who sadly passed earlier this summer.

The winner of the day, John Mather, was awarded the trophy by Mark Ellwood (pictured below).

The weekend saw the Winter League Week Two, and with improved conditions, saw a number of players beating their handicaps with the following scores topping the table.

Division 1
Andrew Garrad 41 points
Nigel Hunnisett 41 points

Division 2
Paul Robertson 41 points
Ian McNally 39 points

Sunday
Simon Williams 37 points

The best six cards from your Winter League total will determine the overall winner in March, so get those rounds in whilst the conditions are favourable.

On Sunday, fourteen players from Bush Hill Park and ten from Enfield, played the American Cup, a mixed foursomes medal for married and cohabiting couples, held this year at Enfield. Sue and I won the competition to retain the trophy for another year at Bush Hill Park.

Next weekend, in addition to Winter League, on Sunday we have the New Member's Trophy. This is for all new members signed up in the 12 months between October 2024 and October 2025. We have sixteen entrants at the time of writing, so I’d encourage anyone eligible to sign up to meet and play with other new members.

Something I’d like to encourage on the issue of Saturday morning play when the course is at its busiest. It was noticeable that a number of players last weekend playing in one, two, and three balls whilst generally Saturday morning competition tee times should ideally be played in four balls if possible. I understand sometimes there are late withdrawals but there does seem to be an issue of block booking when not everyone can play. I would ask that anyone not playing at the weekend removes their name as soon as possible. You can ask the Pro Shop if you are in a one or two ball to place you with another group to make a four ball, although would rather leave this with players to negotiate themselves. This will ensure maximum use of tee booking system and ultimately mean having a more enjoyable round rather than constantly waiting on tees and fairways to play. This is particularly relevant with winter daylight hours reducing tee availability so please bear this in mind.

This week also saw the draw for the men’s winter knockout competitions the Edgar Collar Cup and the Greensomes Goblet. Please ensure you make contact with opponents as early as possible to avoid missing the round deadlines for finishing matches. This avoids having to request extensions especially during the winter as at present there is seven weeks for finalising first round matches.

That's it folks, so happy golfing till next week and may your handicaps continue to go in the right direction.
