Captain's Blog, 3rd April 2024

This coming Sunday, 7th April, our First Team host Theydon Bois in the first round of The Thornton Cup at Bush Hill Park.  This is a 36-hole competition, with tee off commencing at 8:30am and 1:30pm. We are looking for as many of our members to come and support the team throughout the day, so if you are available to cheer on Graeme Allen and his team, it will be hugely appreciated.

On the domestic golf front, last weekend saw the April Medal contested in really tough playing conditions once again. Mark Kermode carded an excellent net 65 in Division Two, while in Division One, James Chard edged Asa Lowther on countback, both coming in with a very solid net 70 apiece.

On Sunday, we held the April Fourball Draw.  Despite it being Easter Sunday and an hour less in bed thanks to the beginning of British Summer Time, fifteen brave souls braved the miserable conditions to contest a very enjoyable Texas Scramble. The eventual winning team consisting of Varney, Sean Nugent and Ray Ripsher came in with an excellent net 63.

On Tuesday, Richard Patterson and Paul Robertson took on Danny and I in the Captain Pro Challenge. A very enjoyable contest ended with Danny getting a great birdie on the 18th to salvage a well-earned draw! We now have a good few challenges booked in for next few months, however details of a very limited number of available spots are still open to book by visiting the Pro Shop.

This coming Saturday, we have the first of two Rafferty Cup Qualifier’s. Qualifying is over the next two Saturdays and each week the best eight scores in both Division One and Two, go through with the 32 qualifiers going into an unseeded ‘blind’ draw for the knockout stages.

Finally, I would like finish on another housekeeping issue. There have been several occasions recently where some important matches have been interrupted on the 13th tee. If you are playing on the course and for whatever reason decide to finish the 5th hole and then cut through to the 13th, please ensure that the 12th hole is completely clear before doing so.
